About the Sovol SV08 Max

The Sovol SV08 Max is a very large, high-speed CoreXY 3D printer. It has an enormous print volume of 500 X 500 X 500 mm, making it one of the largest consumer printers ever made, especially surprising for a CoreXY 3D printer. You can heat the nozzle in the direct extruder up to 300°C, so it's suitable for PLA, PETG and TPU. With the optional enclosure and chamber heater module, this printer can also print ABS, ASA, PC or PA, though you should only use it in a well-ventilated space because Sovol doesn't offer an activated carbon filter. However, there are suitable filter designs in online 3D print repositories. This printer's maximum speed is 700 mm/s and it can accelerate the print head at an extraordinary 40,000 mm/s². The print bed is double-sided, removable magnetically-attached flexible steel with a textured PEI coating that sits on an 8 mm thick reinforced aluminum base plate to ensure a perfectly flat surface over such a large area. This printer uses a 1300 W bed heater to bring the huge bed up to 100°C. The SV08 Max uses a flying gantry design - the bed is stationary while the gantry (containing the CoreXY X and Y axes) moves up and down, positioned by belts powered by 4 stepper motors. All axes move on linear rails. The filament tube is so long that there's an auxiliary feeder module which assists in moving filament to the extruder motor as well as detects tangles and clogs. A fast ceramic heater heats the 50 mm³/sec high flow nozzle, and two part cooling fans are mounted on the front and side of the extruder. Bed levelling is unconventional and very fast, consisting of an eddy current detector attached to the extruder which quickly and continuously scans just above the bed, although the nozzle touches the bed in several places to determine the Z offset. You can use its preinstalled 720p camera to keep an eye on prints or make timelapse videos. This printer runs fully open Klipper firmware which you can adjust and configure, with basic control functionality through a 4.3-inch full color touchscreen. You can upgrade the 8 GB of internal eMMC storage to 32 GB. This printer connects to the network using dual-band WiFi or Ethernet, although you may have to reconfigure the Klipper settings to use the Ethernet port. There's also an HDMI port for connecting a KlipperScreen so that you can always interact with Klipper through the Moonraker web interface. Sovol sells a KlipperScreen display specifically for this printer, but you can use any HDMI touchscreen. This giant 3D printer is intended for seasoned tinkerers and lends itself to reconfiguration and modification. But pay careful consideration to its unusual size: it'll barely fit through most interior doors, requires 2 people to lift, and you may have trouble finding a table large enough and sturdy enough to support it. It's also very noisy.

Benefits of the Sovol SV08 Max

Modern mainboard features - Many 3D printer features relate to the version of the mainboard and firmware, including features like resuming prints after a power failure and support for silent stepper motor drivers for quieter printing. Newer boards also include safety features like thermal runaway protection which shuts the printer down if it detects issues with overheating.

Auto bed leveling - auto bed leveling will ensure your prints have perfect first layers every time and greatly reduce issues with bed adhesion. When using an auto-leveling system, the probe allows better tolerances for slightly warped print beds by measuring and compensating for any inconsistencies. Without this feature, you'll need to adjust the bed level manually using nuts on each corner of the print bed.

Has touch screen - having a touch screen isn't a deal-maker or breaker, but it is a convenient feature that makes it easier to navigate the interface when you are printing files and configuring 3D printing settings.

Direct drive extruder - Direct drive extruders are mounted right above the hot end, and push the filament directly into it, as opposed to a side mounted bowden extruder setup. We prefer direct drive extruders to bowden since they are less prone to jamming and typically require less maintenance. they also are much easier to use with flexible materials

PEI build surface has good balance of adhesion and part removal - PEI beds are one of the more premium build surface options, and for good reason. They offer great first layer adhesion with no spraysor other treatments, and can be flexed to quickly remove parts. You'll need to clean the bed with a solvent like acetone or IPA every so often to maintain the bed's adhesion.

Huge build volume - This printer has one of the largest build volumes in the consumer market, and will provide the most options in terms of printing large parts. While this can be very useful for certain applications, the large footprint of these machines makes them hard to fit on a desk, so we only recommend going with a 3D printer of this size if you really need it

Wireless printing - In addition to the standard USB and SD card connections, you can connect wirelessly to this printer to print from your computer or mobile device.

Linear rail motion system - Linear rails provide added stability to the moving parts of the printer, allowing higher printing speeds without sacrificing quality. Keep in mind that the most important factor to consider when optimizing for print speed is the flow rate of filament, which depends on the hot end and nozzle size moreso than the motion system.

All-metal hot end - An all-metal hot end allows for printing at high temperatures up to 300C, while standard hot ends are capped at 260C before the PTFE material begins to degrade. All-metal hot ends are also less susceptible to jamming, and do not degrade as fast.

CoreXY Kinematic System - A CoreXY 3D printer kinematic system uses two stationary motors to move the print head in the X and Y directions, resulting in faster and more precise movements compared to traditional printers. By separating the movement of the print head from the movement of the build plate, the CoreXY system is able to avoid the added weight and momentum of a moving build plate. This results in less vibration and better control of the print head, allowing for faster and more precise movements. Additionally, the CoreXY system can print at higher speeds compared to H-bot systems because it only needs to move one motor for each axis of movement, reducing the overall weight and inertia of the system.

Dual gear extruder - A dual gear extruder grips filament from both sides and can exert much more force on the filament before slipping. It helps with all filaments but especially with flexible, slippery TPU.

Brand Summary: Sovol

Sovol is a 3D printer brand known for producing innovative printers with more features than their competitors at a lower price. Their printers are beginner-friendly and have good build quality, but their entry-level printer, the SV01, lacks a bed leveling probe. While Sovol's community is still establishing itself, the company's support is well-regarded, and they have over 80,000 users. Sovol has experimented with complex dual extrusion features, which led to clogging problems and quality issues in some of their previous models. However, their current printers, such as the SV06 Plus, offer impressive features like 25-point auto bed leveling and a 500W bed heater. Sovol's varied printers appeal to different users, from new users to advanced users.
